Electronic Book Review:

Many people have become disillusioned with traditional religious beliefs but there is a different way of making sense of life which is founded neither on blind belief nor on arbitrary assumptions, but on what we know directly in ourselves, on meaningfulness. The enormous success of science in its proper field has led most of us to ignore the true nature and limits of rationMany people have become disillusioned with traditional religious beliefs but there is a different way of making sense of life which is founded neither on blind belief nor on arbitrary assumptions, but on what we know directly in ourselves, on meaningfulness. The enormous success of science in its proper field has led most of us to ignore the true nature and limits of rational thinking and to assume that there is no kind of truth which it cannot grasp. Yet the most important truths of all, concerning the meaning of life, are quite outside its reach. But that does not mean that they are beyond our reach. The central idea here is that the ultimate source of all motivation is the pursuit of "meaning", of the ineffable experience of the numinous, and that what theistic religions see reflected in the externalised image of "God" is actually the very essence of our won being, the driving force of the life within us. we seek this "meaning" in many ways, often misguidedly, and on many different levels of intensityand it is our misguided pursuit of it which inevitably divides our will and leads to inner conflict. From this point of view it is possible to see our psychological processes, our inner divisions and conflicts, as a coherent, and perhaps surprisingly simple, whole. An understanding of the nature and cause of those conflicts can help us to overcome them and work towards the goal of wholeness and freedom.
